Nov 09 Colombo: Following the Supreme Court order, a rehearsal was held this morning to commence the passenger bus services along the main coastal highway in the Sri Lankan capital, between Kollupitiya junction to Vajira road junction in Bambalapitiya.
National Transport Commission of Sri Lanka (NTC) said that this rehearsal was held between 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. with the assistance of the police department.
Earlier Supreme Court of Sri Lanka had ordered the police department to start the bus services on the Galle road as the public were inconvenienced due to the road closure for security reasons.
Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekara said a decision will be taken on how the system would be implemented, after today’s rehearsal.
At the moment southbound buses have to travel along Duplication road and enter the Galle road from Bambalapitiya junction as the segment between Bambalapitiya Junction and Kollupitiya along Galle road is only one-way towards the downtown of Colombo.
This traffic arrangement has been made for security purposes and also to ease the congestion on the main road. Public question whether opening the road both ways is a wise decision, taken by the controversial Chief Justice of Sri Lanka.
