Wednesday, November 5, 2008, 4:54 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 05, Colombo: The long proposed electronic driving license with a microchip embedded to contain the driver's details is to be issued to the applicants from January next year.

Department of Motor Traffic recently announced that the new license will be initially given to light motor vehicles valid for a period of 8 years and for heavy vehicles valid for 4 years.

The microchip embedded on the plastic card is expected to retain information of the holder including the blood type and thumb prints. The card will also carry any willingness to donate the body organs in case of a fatal accident.

“We have not decided the measures to replace the already issued licenses to general public with the new card. But will soon arrive at a decision,” stated the source at the Department of Motor Traffic.
