Nov 04, Colombo: Nine persons have received death penalty convictions today from two courts in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka.
According to sources, Matara High courts have found five people guilty of killing a person. Balapitiya High Courts sentenced another 4 persons for death for the same offense.
However, Sri Lankan legal system despite imposing death penalty hasn’t carried out any executions for almost four decades crating a huge rush at state prisons.
“The President of the country has to sign for the executions to take place and for a long time these death warrants were not signed due to religious and humanitarian reasons creating a block at the prisons,” prison authorities explained.
