* Sri Lanka to give pension to all Sri Lankan senior population - report
Saturday, November 29, 2008, 7:11 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 29, Colombo: In an unusual move, Sri Lanka is looking into the possibility of initiating a pension scheme to all the senior population in the country.

A local newspaper quoting Social Services and Welfare Minister Douglas Devananda stated that the government is seriously considering the implementation of a pension scheme to all citizens after a specific age.

It also said that Social Services Ministry Secretary Ms. V. Jegarajasingham had said “state welfare was an avenue that the Ministry was giving serious thought to.”

She however suggested that it would be a good idea to leave out the current recipients of pensions from the new scheme, or to give them the option of choosing between the two.
