* Floods wreak havoc in northern Sri Lanka, 7 killed

Nov 29, Colombo: The heavy rainfall during the past few days has deluged several parts across the country killing at least seven people and displacing tens of thousands including the already displaced in embattled northern Sri Lanka.

Officials of the Disaster Management Center in Sri Lanka said the affected districts include Jaffna, Mannar, Trincomalee, Monaragala and Kandy.

A total of 287,708 people of 99,331 families have been affected by the rains across the country.

In Jaffna 257,336 people of 71,375 families have been affected by the rains while 23,104 people from 5,136 families were affected in Mannar.

A total of 5,959 houses has been damaged and another 13,353 are partially damaged due to the floods in Jaffna peninsula, the DMC reported.

The military said four soldiers stationed in Jaffna were missing after being caught in the flooding.

Sri Lanka Minister of Disaster Relief Services Amir Ali Sahabdeen said the government has taken speedy measures to provide necessary relief to the flood affected people in the North.

The government has allocated Rs 3 million each for Jaffna and Mannar while another Rs 2 million each has been allocated for relief services in Trincomalee and Kilinochchi.
