Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 15:12 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 19, Colombo: Sri Lanka Minister of Ports Development and Justice Dilan Perera said the government will take steps to alleviate the ill effects to the country that can be caused by India's Sethu Samudram shipping canal project.

The Minister further said that it is doubtful if the long term aims of the project could be achieved when the geological context of the region is considered.

The Minister made these observations in the parliament answering a question posed by The United National Party (UNP) MP Ravi Karunanayaka.
