* SSP appointed in Eastern Sri Lanka to provide security to doctors

Nov 18, Colombo: As the Health Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva promised the doctors yesterday, Sri Lankan government had taken measures to tighten the security of the hospitals in the Eastern Province with immediate effect.

Police department said that Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ananda Wijesinghe has been appointed to the Eastern Province with immediate effect to provide security to the hospitals and the universities.

Following the killing of Dr. Palitha Padma kumara, Medical Superintendent of the Vavunathivu hospital in Batticaloa Sunday night Health Minister had discussed the security issue with Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa yesterday morning.

Defence Secretary has agreed to make necessary arrangements to strengthen the security for the doctors who work in the North and East.

According to the sources SSP Ananda Wijesinghe will be in charge of security in Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara districts.

Additional to this security arrangement Special Task Force in Batticaloa district will also provide further security to the doctors in the district.
