Nov 14, Galle: The Mayor of the Galle Municipal Council Kelum Senaviratne submitted his resignation this morning after making a special statement.

Speaking at a special press briefing held in Galle this morning the Mayor said that he had taken this decision to give his position to the Methsiri De Silva, who got equal number of preferential votes as the Mayor in the election held for the Municipal Council two years ago.

Following the election results the authorities have decided to give the mayor position to Kelum Senaviratne, current mayor first and thereafter to Methsiri De Silva.

According to the sources however, Senaviratne did not resign as promised two years ago and demanding the mayor position De Silva went on a hunger strike few months ago.

Finally President Mahinda Rajapaksa intervened in the dispute and asked the current Mayor to resign form his post.

The resignation of the current Mayor will be in effect from next Tuesday.
