May 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition, the United National Party (UNP) continued its protest against the government backed Pillayan group or the Liberation Tigers of Tamil People (TMVP) for the second day yesterday.
Group of UNP supporters and SFLP dissidents were seen shouting slogans and displaying placards in front of the Election Commissioner’s office.
Meanwhile, high profile UNP parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake who came to meet the Election Commissioner said that the party made a complaint against the use of public property for the government’s election campaign.
He also revealed that a supporter of Pillayan had been arrested by the police, with a pistol and three forged identity cards. The police personnel attached to a police post in the Batticaloa town made the arrest, he said.
“Within 15-20 minutes after the arrest, he was again released on an order given by the Defense Secretary,” Attanayake added.
