May 07, Colombo: Sri Lankan traders say that the supply of vegetables in the country has dropped by 60% during the last couple of weeks.
The shortage is due to the torrential rains that damage the vegetable plantations in the Nuwara Eliya, Dambulla, Matale and Anuradhapura. Also, a majority of farmers shifting from vegetable to potato growing in the hill country of Nuwara Eliya has reduced the vegetable production.
Traders say that the harvest of next season will arrive next month. Until such time the increasing prices of vegetables cannot be controlled, they added.
