May 06, Batticaloa: The LTTE's breakaway leader Pilliyan today solicited the support of the public to remain in the democratic political system.
Speaking at an election meeting in Batticaloa town, the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil People or TMVP party said he and his followers had given up arms in good faith and therefore expect the public’s support to remain in mainstream politics.
Speaking further, he argued for the importance of appointing a Tamil person to the chief minister post in the Eastern Province. He said that it was the Tamils who have suffered most in the war and if a non-Tamil becomes the chief minister, the opportunity to find fair solutions to the problems faced by Tamils will be lost. He called those who try to “rob” the Tamil people of this opportunity as “communalists”.
