* Sri Lanka President opens Oluvil Port construction project in the East

May 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today ceremonially started the construction of Oluvil port under the Eastern Reawakening programme.

President addressed the crowd gathered at the ceremony afterwards. He was joined by Ministers Chamal Rajapaksa, A.H.M Fowzie, A.L.M. Attaulaa, and Mrs. Ferial Ahsroff and candidate Hisbulla.

Minister Chamal Rajapaksa handed over boats for fishermen of tsunami affected families in Oluvil Village.

The Port project at a cost 46.1 million euros funded by a Danish company is expected to commence operations in 27 months. The Port will have the capability to cater to large ships with in-built tanks exceeding the eight meter depth level mark.

The project is expected to generate a large number of direct and indirect employment opportunities in the area.
