May 28, Colombo: Latest round of fighting between the Sri Lankan troops and LTTE Tigers along the front lines in embattled North killed 16 Tigers and two soldiers, the military said today.
Fierce confrontations took place in Periyamadu, Periyamadukulam, Mundimurippu, Kalaikovilmadukulam and Nelukkulam areas in Vavuniya yesterday (27) killing three LTTE cadres and injuring two. Four soldiers were also wounded in the fighting. Another rebel was killed yesterday (27) in a confrontation in Muhamalai in Jaffna.
In Janakapura, Kiriibbanwewa areas in Welioya seven Tigers were killed and fourteen were wounded. Two soldiers were also killed in the battle.
Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said five Tigers were killed and twenty four were wounded in incidents in Koddaiadi, Alankulam, Periyamurrippu, Minunkat areas.
Meanwhile security forces recovered the body of one a male LTTE cadre who died in a confrontation in Palliyakundakulam area of Welioya along with a T-56 weapon and two magazines.
Independent verification of casualties is not possible as the access to the conflict areas is restricted to media.
