May 19, Colombo: The Sri Lankan army has extended an amnesty deadline for its deserters by two more weeks, as nearly 4,000 deserters had reported back during the first two weeks, the military said.

The army headquarters said that some 3,709 army deserters had reported back for duty since May 2 under the amnesty period ended May 16 which was extended later.

The decision was reportedly taken following requests from several sections, including the deserters urging more time to rejoin the force.
