* National Freedom Front: Sri Lanka's newest political party takes the stage
Wednesday, May 14, 2008, 18:16 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

May 14, Colombo: The National Freedom Front (NFF), Sri Lanka's newest political party organized by former Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) dissidents, held its inaugural convocation of representatives today.

At a ceremony held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo, the party started its political activities with religious blessings. A number of artists, university teachers, and other professionals who were members of the Patriotic National Movement were also present at the occasion.

The party chairman, Wimal Weerawansa MP, speaking at the gathering said that the NFF will not be yet another addition to the long list of political parties in Sri Lanka. He said his party knows the challenges and will meet them effectively. He also argued that the NFF has no competition with the JVP, but will design its political strategies and activities to compete with the two main political parties - the United National Party and Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

The NFF uses gold as its party colour and expects to contest under the crown sign. Nandana Gunathilaka MP has been appointed as the General Secretary, while Kamal Deshapriya works as the national organizer. Also, a 15-member politburo has been appointed to carry on the party’s future political activities.
