* Sri Lanka opposition leader promises parliamentary act against armed groups once PC polls won

May 01, Trincomalee: Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe yesterday wowed to bring an act in parliament to disarm the armed groups once his party wins the Eastern Provincial Council Polls scheduled to be on May 10.

The opposition leader made these comments while engaged in a tour in Trincomalee to attend two election rallies.

Speaking at a rally, he said that the upcoming election will not be free and fair. “This is an attempt to conduct an election while bearing arms,” he said.

Also, Wickremasinghe siad the sole aim of his party taking part in this election is to build a society free from fear of armed groups and a one with peace and dignity preserved.

“These people cannot live under the jackboot of armed groups forever, there must be a lasting peace for this country, and that is why we are here,” he added.
