May 13, Batticaloa: An unidentified armed gang arrived in a van killed one police constable and injured another in the Batticaloa town last night. The shooting incident took place around 7.20 pm near the filling station in the town.

Police sources said the two police officers attached to Kattankudi police station were leaving after their duties when they were targeted by suspected LTTE gunmen at Arasadi junction in Batticaloa last night.

The slain police officer, who was originally attached to the Hinguraggoda police, had been posted on temporary special duties in the east in view of recently held election. The injured police constable was admitted to the Teaching hospital, Batticaloa.

Batticaloa police is conducting further investigations.
