May 13, Welioya: The Sri Lankan government has decided to build domestic bunkers for the villages under terrorist threats in the Ethawetunuwewa and Jankapura areas of Welioya. The project worth of 60 million rupees is aimed at building protective bunkers for 600 houses in the area.
Deputy Minister of Nation Building Susantha Punchinilame launched the project recently by distributing the aid among the villagers. The government also plans to construct bunkers at schools, government offices, and other public places under this project.
Remote villages in this area dwelt by Sinhalese people have come under the most brutal ethnic cleansing raids by the Tamil Tigers during last 2 decades. Within the last two years the villages came under several mortar attacks by the Tamil Tigers killing a number of civilians and injuring many others.
