May 11, Colombo: The main opposition UNP and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress today rejected yesterday’s election results saying the poll was marred by violence.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said the vote was marred by violence and rigging and his party was ‘totally rejecting the results.”
“This is a totally distorted mandate that they got. This is obtained by fraud,” SLMC Leader Rauff Hakeem said. He also said that opposition leaders planned to meet to decide whether to file a suit to overturn the election.
Head of the People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) Kingsley Rodrigo said that they received 83 complaints yesterday of voter intimidation by the pro-government breakaway rebel party TMVP.
"Some of the polling agents were chased off and they intimidated the voters and the voters were not allowed to cast their vote properly,” he said.
