Mar 27, Colombo: Sri Lanka has launched a campaign to 'seek international support for its seat at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC)' when it comes up for review in May, news reports said.
A local news report said that Sri Lanka ‘has already sent a team to New York headed by the Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe for meetings with UN member states.’
It also said that the delegation will have a series of discussions with at least 30 ambassadors from various countries represented at the UN as well as top UN officials including the special representative for children in armed conflict Radhika Coomaraswamy.
Sri Lanka has been criticized for its poor human rights record by several countries and human rights groups. The review at the UNHRC will take place between May 5 and 16, it added.
