* Clashes kill 28 Tiger rebels in Sri Lanka's North

Mar 13, Colombo: Sri Lanka military today said at least 28 Tamil Tigers were killed and scores were injured in clashes across the battlefronts in the north.

Troops engaged in operations ahead of frontlines in Vavuniya killed 21 Tiger rebels and recovered a cache of weapons including 3 claymore mines and 24 anti personal mines.

Seven Tigers were killed and another 40 were injured in clashes erupted in Welioya and Mannar yesterday, the Defense Ministry reported. A soldier was injured in an AP mine explosion in Mannar.

Meanwhile naval troops recovered a cache of ammunitions, hand grenades and mortar bombs buried beneath a statue of an abandoned and dilapidated church at Nerinchimunai in the Kayts Island in Jaffna yesterday.

Independent verification of death tolls is not possible as access to embattled areas is restricted.
