June 26, Colombo: Sri Lanka Cabinet approved a proposal to launch a rural solar electrification project in Galgamuwa Village of Monaragala District.
The memorandum in this regard was submitted by the Minister of Power and Energy, W.D.J. Seneviratne.
The Cabinet authorized and directed the Chairman of the Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA) and other relevant officials to immediately provide a suitable land free of cost for the implementation of the project.
The electrification project was a result of the recommendations made by the Heads of SAARC states during the 14th SAARC Summit in April 2008.
The government of India has agreed to assist the implementation of the electrification project that is to provide electricity for about 300 households and 50 streetlights. The two governments will sign a Memorandum of Understanding soon regarding this project.
Sri Lanka’s tropical climate makes solar energy the most viable alternative source of renewable energy.
