* Sri Lanka extends emergency

July 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka parliament today extended the state of emergency by another month.

It was passed with 111 members voting in favour and 14 against in the 225-seat parliament. The main opposition United National Party abstained from voting. Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka, moving the motion told parliament that it is a requirement to extend the emergency due to current situation in the country.
