* Former Sri Lankan Minister Richard Pathirana passes away

July 03, Colombo: Former Education Minister and a senior SLFP member, Richard Pathirana passed away this evening at the age of 70 at his residence in Colombo.

Pathirana entered the Sri Lanka parliament by winning the 1983 by-election for the Akmeemana seat. He functioned as the Chief Opposition Whip From 1989-1994.

He served as Education Minister from 1994 and also as the Chief Government Whip until he steppped down from active politics due to poor health.
