* Police nabs the opposition leader of local council in connection with bank robbery

July 26, Badulla : Police has arrested the opposition leader of the Hali Ela local council (Pradesheeya Sabha) in connection with the country’s largest ever bank robbery.

An armed gang robbed a state bank on last Thursday in the Hali Ela town in broad daylight. According to the police sources, the gang had taken away money and jewelry worth of 850 million rupees. Three other suspects had been arrested along with the politician, the sources added.

Police further said that a part of the jewelry had been found and another four suspects are to be arrested.
