* Opposition says Sri Lankan government has not provided security for Chief Minister candidate
Sunday, July 13, 2008, 15:54 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 13, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) today charged that the government should take full responsibility if something happened to North Central Province chief ministerial candidate Retired Major General Janaka Perera.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said the party had sent two letters to IGP Jayantha Wickremaratna this week requesting security, but there was no response as yet.

“Despite police officially informing him that Major General Perera was under LTTE threat, as he played a key role weakening the LTTE, but no action has been taken as yet,” he said.

He said the UPFA candidate Berty Premalal Dissanayake had been assigned a platoon of 30 security personnel.
