* Five rebels killed in clashes in northern Sri Lanka

July 10, Mannar: Sri Lanka defence sources say that five cadres of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were killed in today's offensives in the area north of Mannar.

According to sources, troops of Sri Lanka Army Task Force 1 operating on the Mannar battlefront engaged a tractor transporting armed Tigers this morning. The ground troops detected the vehicle in the Karaimoddi area, south of Vidattaltivu, and called in artillery support around 7 AM. Ground troops claim that 3 Tigers were killed in the incident.

Meanwhile, soldiers marching towards the Vidattaltivu Tiger stronghold claim to have gunned down two Tigers in the Puthukkamam area around 2 PM, sources added.
