* Striking nurses in Sri Lanka defy court orders
Thursday, January 31, 2008, 17:58 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 31, Peradeniya: None of the nursing staff members of the Peradeniya hospital have reported to work despite yesterday's court orders to halt their trade union action, hospital sources said.

However, the doctors and the minor staff continued the services to the residential and out patients to the best of their ability, the sources added.

Kandy Magistrate, Sumudu Premachandra, yesterday ordered the 32 members of the hospital’s nursing staff to halt the strike action and to adhere to the recommendations provided by the Health Ministry on the issue.

The nursing staff went on a strike five days ago on a dispute over a use of a staff room with the doctors.
