* Suspect in Sri Lanka Minister’s brawl with news director bailed out
Friday, January 18, 2008, 18:47 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 18, Colombo: Colombo Magistrate Nishantha Hapuarachchi today granted bail to Nuwan Udaya Gunathilake alias Kudu Nuwan, the underworld gangster who was arrested last December for assaulting the news director of state owned TV channel, Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC). He is also a suspect in several murders and drug dealings.

Gunathilake allegedly accompanied Sri Lanka’s non cabinet Minister Dr. Mervyn Silva to the SLRC. The Minister has reportedly stormed the SLRC to inquire as to why one of his speeches was not telecasted in the daily new bulletin of the TV channel. Both the Minster and the gangster were later assaulted by the angry media people gathered at the SLRC premises.

The Court imposed a financial bond of Rs.10,000 and a personal bond of Rs. 200,000 on the suspect. Also, the Court warned the suspect not to threaten the witnesses to the case.

Court has earlier refused to grant bail to the suspect and also ordered the police to arrest all the people involved in the incident without considering their status.
