Jan 13, Colombo: Japanese special peace envoy Yasushi Akashi arrived in Sri Lanka this morning on a three-day official visit to asses the current state of the peace process.
Akashi held talks with the JVP Leader, Somawansa Amarasinghe this morning and discussed the current situation in the country with the abrogation of the Ceasefire Agreement by the government, a spokesman for the JVP said.
Akashi is scheduled to meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka, Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe tomorrow (14) to discuss the peace process and its future.
This is Akashi’s 15th visit to Sri Lanka since he was appointed as the Representative of the Government of Japan for Peace-building, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction in Sri Lanka.
