Jan 12, Colombo: Sri Lanka has steps taken to ensure the security of VIPs, including Parliamentarians, country's police chief said today. Four police officers including two plainclothes officers are to provide security detail to a parliamentarian.
Inspector General of Police Victor Perera addressing a press briefing held today at Police headquarters said that considering the current situation and MP’s requests government has taken steps to provide additional security to the MPs.
However IGP Perera acknowledged that with the increase in security for the MPs problems will arise regarding the security of the city. Alternative arrangements have been made to strengthen the security, he said.
"At moment Colombo has been given more policemen than other areas. But that is not enough,” police chief told the reporters. He said recruitment and training takes time and he is expecting the public cooperation to fill the gap.
“We can never solve this problem with policemen alone," he said.
Security in Colombo has been strengthened following the high profile killing of opposition Tamil legislator T. Maheswaran and recent bomb attacks in the city.
