Feb 28, Colombo: Sri Lanka Cabinet of Ministers today approved a proposal submitted by Highways and Road Development Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle to invite bids from six selected contractors under Emergency Procurement Procedure in order to award contracts immediately to expedite the rehabilitation of all roads in the hill capital Kandy.

The proposal follows a presidential directive to complete the relevant work before the commencement of the SAARC Summit, scheduled to be held from July 27 to August 2, 2008, the government said.

The proposed project seeks to rehabilitate several roads in the Kandy city and the main Colombo-Kandy Road. Eight overhead bridges will also be constructed in the Kandy town.
