Sri Lanka::
* Animal rights group asks LTTE leader to leave animals out of war
Tuesday, February 19, 2008, 11:59 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 19, Colombo: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), an international animal rights group, urged Sri Lanka's Tamil Tigers to leave animals out of the civil war after the Tigers allegedly carried out a grenade attack at the zoo.

In a letter to the LTTE leader, PETA president Ingrid E. Newkirk said “the explosive device that was set off near the zoo's bird enclosures terrified many animals at the zoo.”

People saddened by the attack had inundated PETA with messages, Newkirk said.

At least four people were injured when a grenade exploded at the Dehiwala Zoo on February 3.
