* GCE O/L examination in Sri Lanka to start island wide tomorrow

Dec 07, Colombo: The GCE Ordinary Level examination for the year 2008 will begin tomorrow island wide including in the embattled regions of North and East.

Ministry of education said that a total number of 5,360,905 candidates are to sit for the examinations under the new and old syllabuses island wide.

The examinations will be held in 4,733 examination centers throughout the country even in the North and East provinces.

The Examination Department has requested the Security Forces in the North and East to provide tight security to 40,000 children who are scheduled to take the national exam at twelve centers in the troubled region.

According to the Ministry the students who sit for the first time will answer the new syllabus while the private and second time candidates will answer the old format.

The paper grading is to begin on December 28 and end by January 06, 2009.
