Nov 04, Colombo: In response to a request made by the Disaster Management Centre of Sri Lankan to USAID for assistance, the United States Government recently donated $100,000 (over 10 million rupees) for emergency relief to assist people affected by the flooding in the North and the East.
A statement issued by the US Embassy in Colombo said the UNICEF will administer the US donation in coordination with local authorities for non-food relief items and it is targeted for the flood victims in Jaffna and in the Wanni.
"The United States Government is eager to respond to this request for assistance to provide relief to the thousands of Sri Lankans who have been displaced and affected by this disaster," said Robert O. Blake, US Ambassador to Sri Lanka.
"With more than 400,000 individuals in the North affected by terrible flooding, it is imperative that we respond quickly to this situation and work together to keep people safe," he added.
The flooding brought on by a tropical storm affected the Jaffna district the most displacing 10,000 families into 135 camps. The floods damaged 11,909 houses fully and another 31,267 houses partially.
