* Nominations for Sri Lanka PC polls to conclude today

Dec 31, Colombo: Main political parties in Sri Lanka are getting ready this morning to submit the remaining nomination papers for the upcoming provincial council election as the acceptance of nominations is to be concluded at noon today.

Following the close of acceptance a one and half hour time period is allocated for submitting objections to the filed nominations.

According to the Election Secretariat six recognized political parties and seven independent groups have filed nominations by yesterday for the election in North Western and Central provincial councils.

Fifty independent groups, 10 from Kandy, 8 from Mathale, 12 from Nuwara Eliya, 13 from Puttalam and 7 from Kurunegala have deposited their bonds as the deadline for bonds expired at noon yesterday.

United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has filed their nominations for the Kandy and Puttalam Districts while the main opposition United National Party (UNP) filed their nominations for the Kandy District yesterday.

The UPFA is expected to file nominations for Matale and Kurunegala today.

The election date is to be announced by the polls chief after the conclusion of submitting the objections.
