Dec 30, Colombo: The deadline for filing nominations to contest the Central and North Western Provincial Council elections ends at noon tomorrow (31).
Election Secretariat said six recognized political parties and seven independent groups have already filed nominations and another 10 independent groups have placed deposits.
Nominations are to be filed with the Returning Officers of the respective Districts. Leaders of the independent groups contesting elections should make a deposit of Rs. 2000 per candidate by 12 noon today (30).
United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance (UPFA), the JVP, the Patriotic People’s Front, the United Socialist Party and the Socialist Equality Party filed nominations for the Puttalam District.
The UFPA and the United National Party (UNP) filed nominations for the Kandy District today.
Both main parties UPFA and UNP are to file nominations tomorrow for the Kurunegala District while the Marxist JVP and seven independent groups filed nominations filed this afternoon.
Central Provincial Council consisting of Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts will fill 56 seats out of 65 candidates.
North Western Provincial Council will elect 50 members to its two districts of Kurunegala and Puttalam from 56 candidates.
The date of election will be announced on conclusion of the receipt of nominations.
