Dec 24, Colombo: Following heavy objections from students and the teachers, the Education Ministry this morning announced that the new syllabus Mathematics question paper in the recently held General Certificate Examination (Ordinary Level) was cancelled and a new exam will be held in its place.
The Department of Examinations has decided to re-conduct the fresh exam on 17of January next year.
According to the Education Minister Susil Premajayantha, the Ministry had already informed the Commissioner General of Examination to conduct the G.C.E. Ordinary Level new syllabus Mathematics II examination again.
The new syllabus Mathematics II question paper in this year’s G.C.E. O/L examination became a major issue as some students as well as the teachers demanded the cancellation of the question paper saying that the paper was set under a new curriculum introduced in 2006, and the students were not prepared for it.
The Education Ministry appointed a special committee to probe the controversy surrounding the paper and its initial report was handed over to the Examination Commissioner General yesterday.
The committee had recommended that there was no controversy in the paper as it was prepared according to the new syllabus but the only controversy was the time frame of the question paper.
The issue became a political agenda as the main opposition United National Party demanded the resignation of the Education Minister for his failure to hold proper examinations for the school children in the country.
