Sri Lanka::
* New Attorney General appointed in Sri Lanka
Thursday, December 18, 2008, 6:07 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

The Constitutional Council has been inoperative since 2005...

Dec 18, Colombo: President's Counsel Mohan Peiris was sworn in before President Mahinda Rajapaksa today at the President's House as the new Attorney General of Sri Lanka.

The position of AG was left vacant by the retirement of former AG, C.R. de Silva in October and President appointed Priyasath Depp, PC, as acting AG in the interim.

Peiris is currently the legal advisor to the Ministry of Defence.

Political analysts say appointment of an Attorney-General by the President is a conflict of the constitution. According to the 17th Amendment to the Constitution the AG shall be appointed by the Constitutional Council.

However the Constitutional Council has been inoperative since 2005 following the expiry of the term of office of the first Council.
