* Sri Lanka plans for 7 flyovers and 54 bridges to ease growing traffic congestion

Aug 31, Colombo: Government of the United Kingdom has come forward to help the Government of Sri Lanka to build 7 flyovers and 54 bridges around the country.

The first of these flyovers was the recently opened Kelaniya flyover. Other locations for such measures will include Kohuwala, Armour Street, Lotus junction in front of Hilton Colombo, Chatham Street, Bastian Mawatha, Dehiwala Junction, and several other traffic prone areas.

Each flyover will be 300 meters long and cost about 1 billion rupees. It will take 6 months to complete the construction.

Sri Lanka Cabinet recently approved a proposal by the acting Minister of Highways and Road Development, T.B. Ekanayaka, to construct 7 flyovers at an estimated cost of 6.46 billion rupees and 54 rural bridges at a cost of 3.35 billion rupees.
