Aug 30, Colombo: Two journalists of a leading newspaper have been assaulted in Colombo last night further escalating the harassment against journalists in Sri Lanka.
Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekara said that two employees of Wijeya newspapers were attacked by a group of people at Slave Island in Colombo.
The SSP added that three suspects who are believed to be involved with the incident were already arrested.
According to the police sources the suspects were the security officers of a former beauty queen of Sri Lanka, who is now involved in politics under the main opposition, United National Party.
A photographer of a leading newspaper and a video cameraman of a private TV station in Sri Lanka were assaulted by the students of the Medical Faculty of University of Colombo last Thursday (28) when they try to photograph the hostels of the faculty. The students have also damaged the camera equipment of the journalists.
