Aug 29, Colombo: Election Secretariat of Sri Lanka says that the gazette notification of the provincial council members who were selected to the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces in last week's election will be published today.
Assistant Election Commissioner W.G Sumanasiri said that they have received all the names of councilors who have been selected to the two provincial councils.
In last week’s provincial council election, Sri Lanka’s ruling party United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) won with a clear majority in both provinces.
In the North Central Province UPFA managed to get 20 seats with two bonus seats while the main opposition, United National Party (UNP) claimed 12 seats. Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) got only one seat in the North Central Province.
In the Sabaragamuwa province ruling party got 25 seats with two bonus seats and UNP received 17 seats under their banner. JVP managed to get two seats in Sabaragamuwa province.
Sources in the Election Secretariat said the two chief ministers will be sworn in for their posts within the next few days.
