* Heavy fighting in Sri Lanka's north leaves 22 combatants dead

Aug 26, Colombo: Heavy fighting erupted across the battlefronts in Northern Sri Lanka left 15 Tamil Tigers and seven soldiers dead yesterday as troops advanced amid stiff rebel resistance, the military said Tuesday. Another 17 Tigers and 11 soldiers received injuries in the ground battles.

Troops of 59 Division captured an 800m stretch of the bank of Thannimuruppukulam tank in Andankulam area of Welioya after a fierce confrontation that lasted over eight hours yesterday (25). The battle killed 8 Tigers and 2 soldiers while 11 more Tigers were wounded, Media Center for National Security (MCNS) reported. Troops have recovered 2 bodies of the slain rebels along with a T-56 waepon

Heavy fighting in Kilinochchi killed 6 rebels and a soldier. Four more Tigers and 7 soldiers sustained injuries. Four more soldiers were killed in clashes along the front lines in Mullaitivu while a Tiger cadre was killed in Vavuniya.

Accurate casualty figures are not possible to obtain as there is no media access in the conflict areas.
