* Sri Lanka to transfer some Eastern University students to other universities

Aug 26, Colombo: University Grant Commission of Sri Lanka has decided to transfer some Eastern University students to other universities in the island.

Chairman of the University Grant Commission, Professor Gamini Samaranayaka said the students who are from the other parts of the country will be transferred under this program.

According to the Chairman system of the transfers are still at the discussion level.

Tension prevailed after a Sinhala student was shot dead at the Eastern University by unidentified persons last week and parents have requested the transfers.

Meanwhile the University of Kelaniya had started its lectures this morning after being closed for more than three months.

University sources said after a series of discussions, the administration had decided to open the University today with tight security.

University of Kelaniya was closed three months ago after student clashes in which some students were severely wounded.
