Aug 23, Deraniyagala: The Police have arrested a Western Provincial Council member of the opposition United National Party and along with some underworld gangsters last night at Deraniyagala in Sabaragamuwa Province, where the provincial polls are to be held today.

Police spokesmen SSP Ranjith Gunasekara said these persons were arrested at a road block near the Deraniyagala town with some illegal weapons.

According to the reports this Provincial Council member of the main opposition party, UNP is well known for his charity works.

However, Deraniyagala Police believe the Provincial Council member and his supporters were on their way to violate election rules when they were arrested.
