Tuesday, April 8, 2008, 3:25 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 08, Colombo: Government Medical Officers Association, the powerful white-collar trade union of Sri Lankan doctors yesterday claimed that they could get Treasury Secretary P.B. Jayasundara to agree to cancel his decision to stop duty free vehicle permits to GMOA members. Therefore, the Trade Union announced that it does not have to take any strike action against the government.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Marxist party, JVP backed medical doctors’ trade union , All Ceylon Government Medical Officers Association, claimed that it would organize a strike as the government announced its decision to stop duty free vehicle permits for public servants.

The GMOA dismissed this claim saying that JVP backed trade union is trying to make unnecessary problems. According to the GMOA, the ACGMOA has only 27 members against over 10,000 members of GMOA.
