Tuesday, April 8, 2008, 11:38 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 08, Colombo: The Speaker of the Sri Lanka parliament adjourned the parliamentary sessions today three times as the Opposition party members protested the appointment of the acting secretary general of parliament, Dhammika Kithulegoda.

Protesting Opposition party legislators sat on the ground of the House. Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe said the appointment of Kithulegoda as the acting secretary general was illegal since he also holds the post of Secretary, Constitutional Council.

The Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara said the appointment was temporary and therefore it was not illegal. However the protestors continued the disruptions and the Speaker suspended the sittings three times.

UNP says that the secretary general of parliament could only be appointed through the Constitutional Council and accuses the President of delaying the appointment of the Council.
