Sri Lanka::
* PAFFREL says no need for polls monitoring in Eastern Sri Lanka if earlier polls were clean
Saturday, April 26, 2008, 15:43 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 26, Colombo: Sri Lanka's prominent election monitoring body, People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said that there would be no need for polls monitoring if earlier polls had been free and fair in the Eastern Province.

Speaking at a media conference, where it released its first supplementary report in lieu of the Eastern Province Provincial Council elections, its director Kingsley Rodrigo noted “the need for fairness in executing the people’s right to vote.”

He also refuted allegations that PAFFREL sides with the government. He highlighted the balanced monitoring carried out by PAFFREL for 25 elections for the past two decades since its inception in Sri Lanka as an elections monitoring body.
