Thursday, September 6, 2007, 12:37 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Sept 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, the major constituent of the minority community that accounts to 7% of the nearly 20 million population of the country, says that the new flag designed by the recently set up Eastern Province does not represent the Muslim community.

The Deputy Minister of Supplementary Crops Development Hassan Ali raised the issue at the adjournment debate in the House yesterday denying accepting the new flag that did not symbolize the Muslim community.

The Northern and Eastern Provinces which were merged since 1987 under the Indo-Lanka Peace Accord were de-merged under a court ruling recently and a new provincial administration is being set up for the Eastern Province.
