Sept 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka's wheat flour monopoly Prima increased the price of a kilo of wheat flour by Rs. 13 with immediate effect yesterday bringing the new price to Rs. 64 per kilo.
The price of all bakery products immediately went up and the price of a loaf of bread was around Rs. 35 this morning. The average increase of a loaf of bread was around seven to eight rupees.
Prima increased the price of wheat flour without consent of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA). Prior consent of the CAA is needed to raise the price of wheat flour, an essential commodity. CAA has filed four cases so far against Prima.
